What should I get from listening to a Symphony?

Like finishing a long story or a vacation adventure, you should feel like you’ve gotten your money’s worth. You should have a sense of accomplishment after a full-of-surprises journey not cut short by limited time. A short attention span might miss the many subtle elements of a symphony.

What is a Symphony?

The word "symphony" came from a Greek word meaning “harmonious.” This was long before the large “symphony orchestra" we know today came into existence. Early symphonies were sometimes written for only a few instruments. They often contain multiple sections, or “movements.” Like chapters of a book, the larger compilation should have variety, and take the listener on a prolonged and interesting journey.

How has the Symphony evolved?

It has become generally a collection of four movements:

I. An opening statement of several themes and melodies with an Exposition, Development (of those themes), and Reprise (restatement of the main developed melodies).

II. A generally slower and more relaxed movement to contrast the first.

III. A much faster and livelier movement, often in some form or variation of ¾-time signature (in this case: 6/8-time).

IV. Final movement with variety like the first but adding closure to the symphony as a whole. In this case: theme and variations. Sometimes the last movement uses material from previous themes in other movements.
